Khanyama Institute is a youth transition and employability institute that prepares young people for further learning, employment, entrepreneurship, and meaningful participation in society.

Dr Garth Allister van Gensen is the Founder and Managing Director of Khanyama Institute. With extensive experience across secondary school teaching and higher education university lecturing, he has dedicated his career to supporting learning, development, and human potential. A qualified educator with an MBA and doctoral qualification, he has taught at school level, lectured at university level, including within the School of Business and Finance at the University of the Western Cape, prepared future teachers for the profession, and supervised Master’s and Doctoral students.
His experience across the education continuum has provided a unique perspective on the transitions that shape people’s lives, from school to further learning, from study to employment, and from potential to purposeful contribution. These experiences informed the establishment of Khanyama Institute, which was founded to support learners and graduates in navigating these transitions with greater confidence, clarity, and direction.
Dr van Gensen believes that education is most powerful when it enables individuals not only to acquire knowledge, but also to grow in capability, realise their potential, and contribute meaningfully to society. This philosophy is reflected in Khanyama’s guiding principle: Learn. Grow. Matter.
To be a trusted catalyst for youth progression, enabling young people to transition successfully into further learning, employment, entrepreneurship, and meaningful participation in society.
Khanyama Institute supports young people through key life and career transitions by providing pathways that build clarity, readiness, capability, and opportunity for sustainable participation in learning, work, entrepreneurship, and society.
Practical, career-focussed pathways designed to prepare you for the world of work
Academic and personal development pathways for long-term growth and purpose
We believe in purpose-driven learning that connects knowledge to real-world impact. We foster confidence through growth by developing capability, not just understanding. Our focus is on meaningful outcomes, where what you learn translates into value beyond the classroom.
